Marijuana officially became legal in Illinois on Jan. 1 2020 and soon afterwards these green Cannabis Amnesty boxes popped up all over Ohare Airport.

Ohare Airport set up these Amnesty boxes for departing travelers to deposit their cannabis paraphernalia before boarding their flights.

The boxes are located outside of TSA checkpoints

So my question is… If you get your cannabis or cannabis related products that you are traveling with through TSA and on your way to your gate …you are then suppose to deposit it in this box? 

The amnesty boxes are owned by Chicago's Department of Aviation and serviced by the Chicago Police Department.

While traveling recently I asked a TSA officer how much cannabis do they get out of the boxes and she said since she has been working there she has only seen the boxes empty when checked. 

My thoughts exactly. 

She said to be politically correct “The boxes was placed there for travelers to safely dispose of cannabis and cannabis products prior to travel, as they still remain illegal under federal law.”

I asked and when they do find anything in the boxes what is done with the cannabis and she simply said that’s a good question 😩
